Finding Your Purpose

Four overlapping circles — what you love, what you are good at, how you want to be remembered, and what the world needs — meeting at 'Your Purpose'.
The four circles. Purpose sits where they overlap.

What’s your purpose? I’ve been asked this countless times. The dictionary defines it as ‘the reason something exists’ or ‘a person’s resolve and determination.’ But since none of us chose to exist, how do we create meaning in our lives?

Too often, “purpose” gets equated with charitable work or saving the world. Noble? Absolutely. Universal? Not so much. Purpose is far more personal and needs to be practical.

A framework that actually worked for me

After years of wrestling with this question, I found a framework that finally made sense: four overlapping circles. Your purpose sits in the sweet spot of intersection.

What do you LOVE? Joy is necessary, but just the starting point. I’d love to be the next Tiger Woods, but “George Woods” isn’t practical! Passion alone isn’t enough.

What are you BETTER than most at? Picture 100 random people doing this activity. Are you in the top quartile? Not world-class, just naturally good. Explore variety to find your talent zone — skills are often hidden off the beaten path.

How do you want to be REMEMBERED? Will this work define part of your legacy, and the stories people tell about you?

What does the WORLD need? Is your work relevant? Purpose without relevance might not get the support it needs.

I found my purpose in solving business problems and helping companies and people grow. I love the space, I’m good at it, I want it to be my legacy, and in today’s India, it’s crucial work.

When you find that magical spot aligning all four dimensions, you become your purpose. Aspiring to be the best version of yourself becomes effortless and rewarding.

What sits at the center of your four circles?
